UPTAKE OF SELECTED HEAVY METALS AND ORGANIC COMPOUNDS FROM AQUEOUS MEDIA USING CARBON COMPOSITE
Abstract
This study is aimed at developing a value added biosorption composite and a cost effective technology for the uptake of heavy metals and organic compounds from aqueous media. A composite biosorbent was prepared by coating chitosan onto acid treated rubber seed shell carbon. The absorption of chromium, zinc, cadmium, and lead metal ions, as well as catechol and 4-chlorophrnol from aqueous media under equilibrium conditions. Equilibrium data yielded the following uptake efficiency values: 93% Cr, 86% Zn, 76% Pb, 82% Cd, 75% 4-chlorophenol, and 38% catechol. The composite comred with other absorbents also prepared showed better performance.
